The Halifax Central Library opened its doors for public for the first time on Saturday morning, when hundreds and hundreds of people came together to see the new landmark in the city. The library’s 129,000 square feet of open and modern space makes it seem more like an Apple store rather than a traditional library. In addition to that, walkways criss-cross through the building’s five floors treasures the building with a sense of both functionality and beauty.

One of the first ones to see the library, Janet MacDonald, alleged that “it’s marvelous,” adding that “we’ve been waiting a long time for something like this in Halifax and it’s nice to see our tax dollars go to a great project.” The total cost of the project, i.e. $57.6 million, was jointly shared by all three levels of government with representatives from each branch on hand. Prior to ribbon cutting ceremony and inaugural of the library, Justice Minister Peter MacKay mentioned in his remarks that “it is a masterpiece,” adding that “this is the latest jewel in the crown of Halifax.”

Halifax Public Libraries’ Chief Librarian, Asa Kachan, alleged that “we are hoping that the kids in the crowd will eventually bring their grandchildren here.” It was highlighted that though the place is called the Halifax Central Library, it is actually a lot more than that. The building accommodates meeting rooms, coffee shop, and a kids’ area with puzzles, books, tablets, video game consoles and giant Lite-Brite displays.
