The Alberta government have announced to increase the price of more than two dozen post-secondary programs. According to the announcement, a total of twenty-five programs will have tuition hikes across the province, which the government calls “market modifiers.” Minister of Innovation and Advanced Education, Don Scott, said that the hikes are intended to “address tuition anomalies involving programs in Alberta and across the country.”
The hikes will effect five programs at the University of Alberta, namely law, economics, pharmacy, business administration and physical therapy. Quite noticeably, the existing students in the impacted programs will not be impacted by the hikes. The university has applauded the approval of market modifiers, which it vows will aid enhance the level of service in each and every of the applications. The U of A’s interim provost, Olive Yonge, stated that “it’s nevertheless an increase that makes it possible for us to offer excellence of good quality in our solutions, but it is not prohibitive for the student.”
Whereas on the other hand, the Alberta Students Executive Council released a statement condemning the decision on late Monday afternoon. It said that it “is frustrated with the government’s selection and sees it as an additional financial barrier that discourages students from pursuing or continuing their education.” NDP leader, Rachel Notley, had similar concerns as she said that “the sons and daughters of physicians, and effective business individuals and lawyers, these are the people who are going to be able to afford to go into these programs. Other men and women are going to be place off by the idea of a six-figure debt coming out of university.”
