Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue have confirmed to have rescued a man off the approach to Golden Ears mountain peak on Monday after he was stranded there for a week. Speaking on behalf of search and rescue, Rick Laing, stated that the Maple Ridge man left his house on Dec. 10. He was witnessed three days later in the West Canyon parking lot in Golden Ears Provincial Park but not after that.

Thereafter, a search team started looking for the man on Sunday and found him in the emergency shelter on Panorama Ridge, i.e. on the ascent to Golden Ears peak. Laing alleged that “we were able to lay hands on him at about two in the afternoon.” According to the rescue official, the 23-year-old intended to spend one night in Alder Flats, then another night at the Panorama Ridge shelter. However, the weather caught up to him and made it impossible to get out. Although he had some outdoor equipment, still it wasn’t suitable for the conditions.

Laing stated that “we figure he was probably in the shelter for seven or eight days,” adding that “eventually, it got to the point he wasn’t able to get a fire going and when we got to him he was down to eating raw eggs.” He said the man made the right decision to stay put, explaining that “if he had attempted to walk out in the weather conditions that were going on, it probably wouldn’t have been such a happy ending.”
