A 61-year-old man from North York drowned yesterday after falling through the ice on Lake Scugog north of Port Perry.

On Sunday, January 4, 2015 at approximately 9:15 a.m. Durham Regional Police received a call from a homeowner on Platten Boulevard who saw a fisherman fall through the ice. The fisherman was dragging a pop-up tent on a sled back to shore when he fell through the ice approximately 250 metres from shore.

Rescuers from the Township of Scugog Fire Department attended the scene and located the place where the male fell in. The DRPS contacted the York Regional Police dive team, who attended the area and recovered the body in the afternoon.

Police officers confirmed the identity of the male as a 61-year-old North York man. His next of kin were notified and an autopsy will be scheduled. He has a cottage on the lake and was an avid fisherman on the weekends.
