The Surrey woman charged with the second-degree murder of her own eight-year-old daughter, 41-year-old Lisa Deanne Batstone, has been found fit to stand trial. Batstone was arrested shortly after Teagan’s body was found Dec. 10 in the trunk of a car that was left in a ditch in South Surrey, near Crescent Beach.
Batstone appeared in Surrey courtroom on Monday morning, when a psychiatric report was presented, which confirmed that she is found fit to stand trial for the second-degree murder of Teagan Erin Batstone. Being ‘fit to stand trial’ implies that the person has complete capacity to understand the court process and properly instruct counsel on their defence. Despite the fact, Batstone remains certified under the Mental Health Act and will continue to be held at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital. Meanwhile, Batstone’s lawyer, Craig Sicotte, has stressed in front of media that she also suffers from severe depression.
Whereas on the other hand, Batstone’s father, Barry Hamilton, mentioned in his remarks that “I feel she has an opportunity now to see psychiatrists and social workers there and not be fearful.” Hamilton shared that he tries to visits Batstone as often as possible and his daughter says she’s “very comforted” by the support. He said that “she’s thanked me many times for coming to visit her,” adding that “I’m just thankful we can do that.” He said that “(Teagan’s death) was an incredible shock for everybody,” highlighting that Batstone was well liked, “fantastic” with children and very close with her daughter.
