Winnipeg South Conservative MP, 41-year-old Rod Bruinooge, has announced not to run again in the next federal election. According to Bruinooge, it has become too difficult for him to leave his young children and travel to Ottawa. A statement posted on his website said that “after losing a close family member over Christmas it has reminded me how precious each moment is with my kids,” adding that “I have told my children today that come October I will no longer be an MP and will be spending all of my time with them. They were very excited.”
Furthermore, Bruinooge explained to have lost his father-in-law over the Christmas holidays, whose funeral was last week. Admitting that he was already considering it for some time, he said his father-in-law’s death has left him with no other choice. Bruinooge stated that “when I was first elected I didn’t even have kids,” but now he has an eight years old daughter, Sarah, and six years old son Luke.
Bruinooge confessed that it had been a little easier earlier since the children were younger but now that they are in school full time, he misses too much of their lives when he is away. He said that “it’s hard not to be around.” However, commenting on the possibility to run for the provincial Tories or any other political office in the future, he said that “I have some thoughts on that but I’m not going to make any announcements today.”
