Advocates for Mr. Cosby’s sexual assault victims have announced to organize a charity event, Voices Carry, to run opposite to his performance in Kitchener. Quite noticeably, the approach is different from both London and Hamilton, where protests have been planned ahead of Bill Cosby’s performances this week.
According to event spokesperson, Melanie Baker, “it’s a fundraiser with all ticket and donation proceeds going towards Women’s Crisis Services and the Sexual Assault Support Centre here in Waterloo Region.” She explained that “it was our response to the Centre not cancelling the Cosby performance and we thought trying to do something for the community and spread awareness and education and keep these conversations going was our choice of how to go instead of protesting.” Baker confirmed that that doors are slated to open at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. She said that “we can only send so much of a message to the Cosby survivors but we can certainly send a message to our own and if we can get the conversations going and raise some money it’ll actually help in our own community and that really was our focus.”
Mr. Cosby has been accused of sexual assault by more than two dozen women over the last 40 years, while the comedian’s legal representatives consistently assert that the claims are unfounded. Cosby is most known for his role of Dr. Cliff Huxtable on “The Cosby Show” from 1984 to 1992. 77-year-old Cosby has never been formally charged despite numerous allegations.
