A man and two women charged with 30 counts in relation to a human trafficking investigation

On Thursday, January 15, 2015, the Toronto Police Service Human Trafficking Enforcement Team, and members of 51 Division, started an investigation into a Human Trafficking occurrence. 

It is alleged that: 

– a 27-year-old woman was recruited into the sex trade 

– the woman was forced to work over a period of five days from multiple motels in the Toronto area 

– the woman was transported throughout the GTA to work 

– the woman was forced to hand over her monies to a man 

– the woman was able to escape 

– two days later, the man located the victim and her boyfriend 

– the man, and another man, assaulted the woman and her boyfriend 

– the two men kidnapped the woman at gunpoint and put her in the trunk of a vehicle 

– the two men assaulted the woman’s boyfriend, tied him up, and robbed him of his personal property 

On Thursday, January 15, 2015, at 2 a.m., Toronto Police located the woman and arrested three people. 

Matthew Deiaco, 29, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with: 

1) Procuring person to provide sexual services 
2) Exercise Control 
3) Material Benefit from Sexual Services 
4) Trafficking in Persons by Recruiting 
5) Trafficking in Persons Financial Benefit 
6) Assault with a Weapon 
7) Pointing a Firearm 
8) Uttering Death Threats 
9) Armed Robbery 
10) Kidnapping 
11) two counts of Forcible Confinement 
12) Assault Cause Bodily Harm 
13) Use of imitation Firearm During Commission of an Indictable Offence 

Carla Whyte, 29, of Oshawa, was arrested and charged with: 

1) Assault with a Weapon 
2) Uttering Death Threats 
3) Armed Robbery 
4) Kidnapping 
5) two counts of Forcible Confinement 
6) Use of imitation Firearm During Commission of an Indictable Offence 
7) Pointing a Firearm 
8) Assault Cause Bodily Harm 

Michelle Karabin, 29, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with: 

1) Procuring person to provide sexual services 
2) Material Benefit from Sexual Services 
3) Exercise Control 
4) Trafficking in Persons by Recruiting 
5) Trafficking in Persons Financial Benefit. 
6) Kidnapping 
7) Forcible Confinement 

All three people were scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Friday, January 16, 2015, 10 a.m. 

Police believe there may be more victims.
