A veteran politician and a key person in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government, John Baird, has announced to step aside from public life and resign from his position. 45-year-old Baird’s resignation was a surprise for almost the entire Parliament Hill. The announcement was made during a speech at the House of Commons on Tuesday morning.

The Ottawa Member of Parliament, Baird, confirmed in the announcement that he is stepping down as foreign affairs minister and leaving politics. He stated that “the time has come to start a new chapter in my life.” Although Baird refrained from explaining what he will be doing next, many suspect he will take a job in the private sector. In an emotional speech, Baird confessed that “I will miss this place very much.” Applauding the service of the Harper administration, Baird alleged that “the world continues to see the best that Canada has to offer.” Baird explained to have informed PM Harper about his last night.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Harper stated that “it is with great regret and affection that I today accepted the resignation of one of the finest ministers that I have had the privilege of working with, John Baird.” He added that “John has always been willing to do a lot of heavy lifting in my various cabinets and has assumed daunting new responsibilities with unsurpassed energy, commitment and professionalism, never losing sight of the fact that he was serving the Canadian people.”
