On Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2010, EPS officers observed a 50-year-old male conduct an alleged drug sale from his vehicle in the presence of his young son.
The EPS Edmonton Drug and Gang Enforcement (EDGE) Unit, with a CDSA warrant for the suspect’s vehicle and residence already in place, arrested the alleged dealer and buyer in the process of the sale at 50 Street and 101 Avenue. The seven-year-old child was immediately taken into care by the EPS Child at Risk Response Team and then the government Crisis Unit.

Inspector Greg Preston of EDGE, is no longer surprised to see children in an active drug environment. “It is extremely disappointing that a parent would expose their or any child directly to drug trafficking, and the inherent dangers associated with such activity; not to mention the risks involved for a child to have access and exposure to any weapons and drugs found in the home,” says Preston.
A search of the residence and the vehicle resulted in the seizure of various amounts of hard and soft cocaine, 3,000 prescription pain pills, approximately $80,000 in Canadian and U.S. currency, a handgun, ammunition and two other weapons. One man and one woman face a total of 32 charges. Names have not been released to protect the identity of the child. EDGE Unit continues to investigate.

A 50-year-old male and 44-year-old female have been jointly charged with
possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a controlled substance (Oxycodone tablets) for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a controlled substance (Tylenol 4 tablets) for the purpose of trafficking, careless storage of firearm contrary to firearms act regulation, careless storage of ammunition, possession of a firearm while unauthorized, possession of a prohibited/restricted weapon knowing possession is unauthorized, unauthorized possession of unloaded prohibited or restricted firearm together with readily accessible ammunition for firearm, possession of a prohibited device knowing possession is unauthorized x3, willfully cause a child to be a drug-endangered child.
