Police disarm a pipe bomb in Merritt, BC

As of approximately 6:00 P.M. on 2010.12.30 Ediv. EDU (Explosive Disposal Unit from Vancouver) has confirmed that the suspicious apparatus was in fact a pipe bomb and has been disarmed. Investigation is continuing.

On December 30, 2010 at 1037 hours, a Merritt resident reported to Merritt RCMP that he had discovered what appeared to be a pipe bomb on his property. The property is very large and backs onto Crown land. The bomb was positioned near a cattle gate and appeared to have a trip wire still intact. The area behind the complainant’s residence is often used by ATV’s, bicycles and pedestrians.

The complainant stated to members that he was out for a walk on his property when he discovered the bomb. He further advised that he has not been in this particular area of his property for months.

Merritt RCMP is currently being assisted by E Division EDU(Explosive Device Unit) and Kamloops PDS(Police Dog Unit) to safely remove the device and search the property for any similar devices. The property has been safely secured by the RCMP and is of no danger to the public. The exact location is not being released at this time pending further investigation.
