Man Arrested at a Day Care, Chatham

A Wallaceburg man was arrested yesterday afternoon inside a Chatham day care.

Shortly before 4:00 p.m. yesterday, a man entered the Children’s Village Day Care on Dover Street in Chatham. He was wearing a t-shirt and jeans, with no shoes on his feet and was acting oddly. The man was not making sense when he spoke and an employee became concerned that he might become violent. She immediately moved the children to another room and locked the door for their safety. She then called 911 requesting police assistance.

Officers arrived within two minutes and found the man passed out on the floor. The children remained safe in the other room. Two officers woke the man and he immediately became violent. He would not provide his name and attempted to resist the officers. A brief struggle ensued until the officers were able to gain control and handcuff him. Due to his uncontrollable state, profuse perspiration, extreme strength, and apparent hallucinations, EMS was contacted to transport him to the hospital as officers believed he might be suffering a medical emergency known as Excited Delirium.

The 26-year-old Wallaceburg man was transported to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance by ambulance where he was admitted. He remains in hospital for observation and treatment.

This incident remains under investigation.
