A man is in police custody following a disturbance early this morning at a residence on Raleigh Street in Chatham.

At approximately 1:05 a.m. this morning, police received a 911 call from an anonymous citizen who received information that a disturbance was occurring at a residence on Raleigh Street. Officers attended and located a male victim outside the residence that had been choked and had visible marks on his throat. He advised that the suspect was still inside the house.

When officers attended inside, they found a man holding a knife. The man would not obey the officer’s commands to drop the knife and began to walk towards them. He was pepper sprayed and taken into custody at gun point.

A 27-year-old Chatham man has been charged with:
Aggravated assault
Overcoming resistance to commission of offence
Assaulting a peace officer with a weapon
Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
Resist arrest
Breach probation

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
