A fire broke out on the 1300 block of Commercial Drive just after 1 a.m. on Monday and completely destroyed four suites in the area. According to the Vancouver Fire Rescue, they are still investigating the cause of the early morning fire but it does not appear suspicious to them right now.

In his remarks, Assistant Chief Ron Coulson mentioned that there was a lot more damage by the fire than the four suites. He explained that “there was extensive smoke damage and water damage to the remaining suites, which resulted in approximately twenty residents being displaced and put in the care of Emergency Social Services in the City of Vancouver.” In addition to that, Coulson explained that one person endured non-life-threatening injuries due to rushing into the burning building to save a pet. He stressed that it is not recommended for public to do something like this as it is the duty of fire officials who have the gear and are trained to carry out rescues.

According to one resident of the block, Beau Bennett, he was on his way home when he saw the building was on fire. He revealed that “it looked like the Gates of Hell were coming out of those two apartment.” Bennett added that he quickly helped one of his neighbours who was still in her apartment, explaining that “I know how to get into her place, so I ran in there, ran into her place, grabbed her, took her out… and I understood, as soon as I opened up the door into the hallway of her room, I understood why she didn’t leave, because it was flooded with smoke.”
