Police has confirmed the news of a man opening fire during an early morning fitness class in Toronto Park. According to the witnesses, the suspect joined a free “prison-themed” boot camp at Christie Pits park in the city’s west end and reportedly worked out for about half an hour before opening fire. The suspect then fled the scene, police say.
The shooting caused serious injuries to two people in the group. According to the officers, they found a 35-year-old fitness class instructor with a gunshot wound in the abdomen so he was shifted to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery and is now recovering. Meanwhile, the second 20-year-old victim, who was hit in the foot by a bullet, is still in serious condition but he is expected to fully recover.
In a press conference by Toronto Const. Craig Brister, he alleged that “I don’t think we are at the point where we are willing to make any sort of statement about this being a targeted shooting.” He explained that “investigators are still conducting interviews with witnesses so we are trying to be careful with what information we are releasing. We don’t want to taint any recollection from witnesses.” According to a statement by the company running the outdoor fitness class, 25/7 Fitness, almost a dozen people were in attendance when the shots rang out. It was explained that the class was themed like the sort of workout inmates get behind bars.
