59 year old wheelchair bound man killed in Oshawa

A 59-year-old Oshawa male in a wheelchair was killed following a motor vehicle collision in Oshawa last night.

On Wednesday February 23rd, 2011 at approximately 6:22 p.m., officers from the Central East Division were called to the scene of a motor vehicle collision involving a vehicle and a 59- year-old male operating a motorized wheelchair. A black Chevrolet Blazer, being driven by a 45-year-old Oshawa male, was southbound on Ritson Road, near Etna Avenue, when it collided with the wheelchair within the southbound lanes.

The driver of the wheelchair was treated by EMS however he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was later identified as Richard PEYTON of Normandy Street in Oshawa. The driver of the Blazer was not injured and remained at the scene of the collision.

Members of the DRPS Traffic Services Branch, Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene to conduct an investigation. The roadway was closed for several hours while evidence was collected. Road conditions are not considered to be a factor. Investigators are continuing their investigation into the collision. Police would like to speak to anyone who may have information or witnessed this incident.
