The Vancouver School Board has announced to have suspended its strict school closure process in a surprise move at a time when WorkSafeBC is investigating allegations of bullying and harassment. The investigation has already led six senior staff members to go on medical leave.
In his comments on the decision of suspension, British Columbia’s Education Minister, Mike Bernier, called the situation at the board “unprecedented” and reiterated that he’s open to removing trustees from their posts. Mr Mike Bernier mentioned in a press conference that “that’s something that I will still be seriously considering,” but he is waiting for WorkSafeBC’s findings to make any decisions. The board is currently undergoing an audit and it has repeatedly challenged the provincial government over its budget and refusal to close schools. Its chair abruptly stepped down from his position last year.
The current chair of the school board, Mike Lombardi, mentioned in his remarks on Tuesday that hiring of an acting superintendent and acting secretary-treasurer have brought stability to the organization. He stressed that reversal on the school closure process was prompted by the province’s recent shift on utilization targets and not the fact that senior staff members are on leave. Upon inquiry about whether Vancouver residents should still have confidence in the board, Mr. Lombardi replied that “I’m very confident that the people of Vancouver elected us and they have faith in us to carry out our responsibilities, to focus on teaching and learning and student success.”
