B.C. Police has released images of the suspect, Sheldon Kyle Thunderblanket, who shot an RCMP officer along the Trans-Canada Highway near Golden on Tuesday. According to the police, Thunderblanket is a murder suspect as well as an attempted murder suspect in Saskatchewan.
The suspect was stopped at a routine check post at about 3:00 p.m. near the weigh scales west of Golden, B.C. but he refused to cooperate and then stole a nearby vehicle to drive off while also shooting at an officer in the process. Thereafter, police started hunting the suspect through the night but were unable to locate him. Meanwhile, the RCMP officer shot during the incident was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The spokesperson for RCMP in B.C., Staff Sergeant Rob Vermeulen, has confirmed that “at this time we’re confirming that our officer sustained a gunshot injury during the circumstances surrounding the initial vehicle stop. The police officer has been taken to hospital. The officer and family are being offered all possible support.” The stolen vehicle was located late Tuesday night just outside of Revelstoke and police are now searching an area about 4 kilometres east of the community.
The police has warned the public that the suspect might be armed and dangerous and, therefore, the public should not to approach him directly but instead immediately call 911 if he is spotted. The Trans-Canada Highway was closed on Tuesday night while police conducted a search for the suspect.
