The athletes were selected after a series of tryout and training camps at the University of Toronto’s Mississauga Campus in Mississauga, Ontario. The team will now fly to Mexico on June 10.
The team boasts an impressive list of provincial stars, many of whom were prominently featured during last summer’s 15U and 17U National Championships in Toronto, Ontario. Included on the team is 15U National Championship tournament Most Valuable Player Kia Nurse (Hamilton, Ont.) and 17U National Championship first team all-star Emma Wolfram (Kamloops, B.C.). Also included on the team are 15U National Championship first team all-stars Kolbie Orum (Maple Ridge, B.C.), Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau (Gatineau, Que.) and second team all-stars Aimee Wilson (Chestermere, Alta.), Anmol Mattu (Richmond, B.C.), and Hannah Jardine (St. John’s, N.L.).
Canada drew Group A during the official draw for the FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Women and joining them in the group will be Puerto Rico, Guatemala and Mexico. The team takes on Guatemala on June 13, which will be followed by a game versus Puerto Rico and preliminary round play concludes against Mexico on June 15.
Other than winning the entire tournament, the goal for Canada will be to qualify for the FIBA U17 World Championship for Women next year by finishing in the top three in the tournament. The last time the Cadettes played in the FIBA Americas tournament in 2009, they qualified for the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship for Women by capturing a silver medal.
