Winnipeg JetsDefenceman Derek Meech undergoes surgery

The Winnipeg Jets today announced they have recalled forward Jason Jaffray and defencemen Arturs Kulda from the St. John’s IceCaps and re-assigned defenceman Paul Postma to St. John’s.

Jaffray, 30, has played in 15 games with the St. John’s IceCaps this season where he is second on the team in goals with seven and has recorded 12 points (7G, 5A) in 15 games. In his most recent game on Saturday, Nov. 12/11, Jaffray recorded a hat trick versus the Connecticut Whale. The Olds, AB native was named the captain of Winnipeg’s AHL affiliate at the beginning of the season. Jaffray has played in 36 career NHL games with Vancouver and Calgary scoring 10 points (4G, 6A) and recording 33 penalty minutes.

Kulda, 23, has played in 13 games for the IceCaps this season and has earned six points (2G, 4A) and 12 penalty minutes. He is tied for second on the team with a plus/minus rating of +9. The native of Riga, Latvia has played in six career NHL games with Atlanta recording two assists and four penalty minutes. Kulda was originally drafted by Atlanta in the seventh round, 200th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Postma, 22, played in three games with the Jets after being recalled from St. John’s on Nov. 3/11. He recorded no points or penalty minutes in those three games. He returns to St. John’s where he’s played in 10 games this season earning eight points (2g, 6a) and eight penalty minutes. Postma has now played in four career NHL games. He was selected by Atlanta in the seventh round, 205th overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

The Jets would also like to advise that defenceman Derek Meech has undergone surgery related to a lower body injury and will be out an estimated six to eight weeks. Meech, 27, last appeared in a game for the Jets this season on Oct. 20/11 in Ottawa (1-4 L). Meech suffered a lower body injury and has been on the Jets’ injured reserve list since Oct. 29/11. The Winnipeg, MB native has played in 128 NHL games for Winnipeg and Detroit recording 16 points (4G, 12A) and 43 penalty minutes.
