The Toronto Marlies defeated the Rochester Americans, AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres, by a score of 3-2 in overtime tonight at Blue Cross Arena. With the win, Toronto earns a three games to none sweep of Rochester for the second consecutive season.

After a scoreless opening frame, Greg Scott gave Toronto a 1-0 lead on a shorthanded goal at 6:19 of the second period. The Amerks would tie the game on Zemgus Girgensons’ third tally of the post-season at 14:20 of the second period. Greg McKegg’s second goal of the playoffs would give the Marlies a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame. Amerks forward Nick Tarnasky scored late in the third period to send the game into overtime. Just over five minutes into the extra frame, Will Acton tipped in a Kevin Marshall point shot to give the Marlies a 3-2 victory.

With tonight’s win, Toronto becomes the first team to advance to the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs. Second round opponent and dates will be announced at the conclusion of the first round.
