Bipasha Basu (Photo: Annandi Merhai)On Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 8pm, the Rogers Centre in downtown Toronto, Canada will be the scene of the 12th International Indian Film Academy Awards. This annual awards ceremony has taken place each year in a different locale across the planet in order to showcase Indian cinema to an international audience.

Who will be honoured this year? The film 3 Idiots (2009) holds the record for the most number of wins with 16. That is followed by Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) with 14, and Jodhaa Akbar (2008) with 11. The CBC reports that the mafioso drama Once Upon a Time in Mumbai leads the night’s contenders with 12 nominations while other high-profile competitors include the action blockbuster Dabangg, political thriller Raajneeti, wedding-themed romantic comedy Band Baaja Baaraat and the international drama My Name is Khan.

There are 12 popular awards: Best Movie, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Performance in a Negative Role, Best Performance in a Comic Role, Best Music Director, Best Lyricist, Best Playback Singer Male, and Best Playback Singer Female.

There are 11 special awards: Style Icon Award, Diva Award, Glamour Star of the Year Award, Star Debut Award Male, Star Debut Award Female, Face of the Year, Special Award for Global Impact, Outstanding Contribution to Indian cinema, Outstanding Achievement in Indian cinema, Outstanding Achievement by an Indian in International Cinema, and Artists of the Decade.

Finally, there are 14 technical awards: Best Art Direction, Best Action, Best Background Score, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography, Best Costume Design, Best Dialogue, Best Editing, Best Makeup, Best Screenplay, Best Sound Recording, Best Sound Re-Recording, Best Special Effects, and Best Story.

Road Closures

On Saturday, June 25, 2011, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. a portion of Bremner Boulevard, between Lower Simcoe Street and Payhere Drive, will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic for this event. Curb lane closures will also be in effect on Front Street West, west of Lower Simcoe Street and on Lower Simcoe Street, south of Front Street West. There will be no access to public parking at the Rogers Centre.

  7. We have heard that the [b]LIVE[/b] show was waste of money. The show started about hour late and the performances by the stars were [b]NOT[/b] very impressive.

    Lot of people left early.
