2012 US Open Third round tees off from Olympic Golf Club in San Francisco Friday at 4 pm New York time.
Calm and cool conditions under a thin layer of fog already burning off gave the Olympic Club a majestic backdrop of San Francisco's steep hills when the first groups teed off shortly after 7 a.m. It could be the last time for most of the players to enjoy the peaceful setting.
Tiger Woods would be looking forward to continue his quest for 18 major titles and the fourth US Open title this week. He is tied for second at (-1), three shots off the lead and looks like his old self for the first time since the 2008 Open.
Bubba Watson has praised Tiger’s play on Thursday: "That was the old Tiger, that was beautiful to watch.”
2010 US Open Champion Graeme McDowell is also near the top of the leaderboard at (-1).
Matt Kuchar, Ian Poulter, Jim Furyk and Nick Watney are all near the top of the leaderboard, but all of them are trying their best to chase Michael Thompson, a rookie golfer on the PGA tour who somehow tamed Olympic with a (-4) 66 on day one.
Woods is three shots behind leader Michael Thompson entering today’s second round.
Top golfers like Rory McIlroy ( 7), Bubba Watson ( 8), and world No. 1 Luke Donald ( 9) were chewed up and spit out by the course yesterday and will need to play the best golf of their lives just to make the cut today at Olympic.
Woods has told about the course: "This golf course is so demanding, if you're off your game just a little bit, you're going to pay the price, and it's hard to make pars. Phil and Bubba were off just a little bit."
This could easily become one of those U.S. Opens in which the winner comes in right around minus-1 or minus-2.
The final championship round is going to be on Sunday – the Father's Day.
