Wimbledon 2012 third round begins Friday morning with Day 5 at the All-England Club. The second round ended with a huge upset, as No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal, fresh off a win at the French Open, was upset by the 100th-ranked, Lukas Rosol, 6-7 (20), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Rosol, hailing from the Czech Republic, is the lowest-ranked player to ever defeat the Spanish champion at a Grand Slam tournament.
Despite this unbelievable misfortune to Nadal, the favorites seemed to take care of business on Day 4. American players Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick both advanced to the third round. Fish is playing his first Grand Slam tournament since the Australian Open after undergoing a May 23 procedure to correct his heart arrhythmia. He defeated James Ward in a thriller, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (10), 6-3. Roddick advanced after defeating Bjorn Phau, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
On Women side, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams have made into the third rounds, after showing best performances’ in the second round on Thursday. Former World No. 1 Sharapova succeeded against Tsvetana Pironkova in three sets match with 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-0, meanwhile Serena has thrashed Melinda Czink of Hungary in straight sets with a 6-1, 6-4 score line. Teaneck, NJ, native Christina McHale successfully got a 7-5, 7-5, win over Mathilde Johansson of France.
No. 1 Novak Djokovic will be looking forward on Friday to avoid a loss when he faces Radek Stepanek. No. 3 Roger Federer will wrap up the day on Centre Court with his third-round match against Frenchman Julien Benneteau. On women’s side, Maria Sharapova will be seen in action on Court 1 against Su-Wei Hsieh while No. 3 Aga Radwanska will play against home-favorite Heather Watson on Centre Court.
