The U.S. Women field hockey team will compete in their second preliminary match of Pool B against world No. 2 Argentina on Tuesday, July 31, at 7:00 p.m. The recent history between Argentina and the U.S. further intensifies with this match on the infamous blue and pink turf at Riverbank Arena.
Looking back at the history to October 2011, the then world No. 13 U.S. upset the previously world ranked No. 1 Argentinians in a 4-2 battle at the Pan American Games. Prior to the upsat faced in 2011 Pan American Games, Argentina had never lost a game in the tournament since its induction in 1987. The monumental victory over Argentina automatically qualified the U.S. for the London Olympics – capturing the attention of the hockey world and once again proving themselves as an international threat.
In June the two teams met again for a four game series in Virginia Beach, Va. The tournament ended in a draw result. Argentina and the U.S. each got able to secure a single victory and shared two ties.
Argentina had taken off first London Olympic performance last Sunday with a remarkable win of 7-1 over South Africa. While, U.S. happened to lose their opening pool match 2-1 against Germany on the same day.
Though the World renowned Argentinian team has won 3 of 4 outings in Olympics against U.S. drawn 1, still the team U.S. has proven numerous times to be fierce competition for Argentina and is confident a win is within reach in their second Olympic match.
