As the Day 2 proceeded, Alviro Petersen hit a career-best 182 as South Africa stretched their first innings to 419 before they were bowled out at tea of the second Test at Headingley on Friday.
Petersen’s highest Test score, proved the English team wrong – who after winning the toss in the second Test put South Africa in to bat, anticipating that their quartet of fast bowlers would prove disastrous for the tourists. While, the tourists get able to survive until tea on the second day.
Petersen did not just prove less vulnerable than England had anticipated; he produced the Test innings of his life: 182 in 365 balls, a ball for every day of the year, a year which from England's perspective will go down as an annus miserabilis.
After Petersen's brilliant innings ended in mid-afternoon, JP Duminy hit an unbeaten 48 as the last three wickets added 66 runs and made opponents more confused about their decision to pick an all-seam attack and send South Africa in.
There was irony for England, when part-time off-spinner Kevin Pietersen took his side's first wicket of the day after Petersen and Jacques Rudolph had batted most of the morning in a stubborn sixth wicket stand of 59.However, South African 1st Innings ended at a score of 419 runs and prominent among the English bowlers was Stuart Broad with 96-3.
Afterwards, England started its innings and made 48-0. Both the openers Strauss and Cook will resume English team’s batting on Day 3.
