On Day 3 of the second Test match between India and New Zealand, 14 wickets fell in total; courtesy Tim Southee (7/64) and Ravichandran Ashwin (5/69) as New Zealand ended the day on 232/9 with an overall lead of 244 runs. India have earlier chased 207 here to win against Australia in 2010, and with the pitch showing little signs of wear, India hold a little advantage over the tourists.

Southee bowled with great control and guile, with figures of 7 for 64 as the sixth-best bowling figures in New Zealand’s history. They were also the best figures by a New Zealander on Indian soil, bettering Dion Nash’s 6 for 27 at Mohali in 1999. Ashwin then kept India in the game with his fifth five-wicket hunt, to set up a fascinating fourth-innings chase by having 5 for 69 at stumps.

The morning session was for the New Zealand, while India dominated in the afternoon and both teams kept pace with each other in the final session. An absorbing day’s cricket saw 301 runs scored for the loss of 14 wickets.

Starting the day 283/5, Kohli (103) made century but failed to push on as Southee’s early new ball burst and Indians were restricted. Southee picked up 4 wickets in the morning session.

New Zealand started their second innings aggressively with McCullum before lunch. In the second session Umesh Yadav got the wicket of dangerous McCullum and Guptill. Ojha then took the all-important wicket of Ross Taylor just before the tea break.

Ross Taylor (35), Daniel Flynn (31), James Franklin (41) and Kruger van Wyk (31) all got starts but failed to convert it to something big. The Kiwis’ middle order batted sensibly in the second session but the introduction of R Ashwin in the 19th over again changed the match in hosts’ favor.  Ashwin got the wicket of Kane Williamson in his initial over and from there on Indians started chipping away at the NZ batting order.

At the Day 3 stumps, hosts are a bit ahead in the evenly contested fixture at Bangalore with two more days to play.
