2012 U.S. Open holds some memorable matches on Wednesday. After rain interrupted play on Tuesday, the schedule of some players has gotten a little jumbled, but, weather permitting, everything will be back on track following Thursday.
On the men’s side, Andy Roddick saw his career come to an end at the hands of Juan Martin del Potro with 7-6, 6-7, 2-6, 4-6. He ended his career with a 612-213 record and 32 singles titles, including a victory at the 2003 U.S. Open. He leaves behind a legacy as the only American who was able to adequately follow in the footsteps of Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi.
Novak Djokovic has also advanced. Djokovic will face Del Potro in the quarterfinals after Stanislas Wawrinka was forced to retire from Wednesday’s match after getting medical assistance from his trainer. Andy Murray came from behind to beat Marin Cilic with 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-0. Roger Federer suffered a shocking defeat courtesy of Tomas Berdych with 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6.
On the women’s side, Serena Williams continued her dominance this year, disposing of Ana Ivanovic in straight sets with 6-1, 6-3. Williams will go up against Sara Errani in the semifinals, who defeated Roberta Vinci in straight sets on Wednesday, 6-2, 6-4.
Maria Sharapova emerged victorious over Marion Bartoli in three sets after dropping the first set with 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The 25-year-old Russian will face world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals.
