American Ryder Cup Captain, Davis Love III have the U.S. squad with his 4 Captain’s picks: Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, and Brandt Snedeker. The remaining squad includes 5 top-10 players: Tiger Woods, Webb Simpson, Jason Dufner, Bubba Watson, and Steve Stricker, as well as young studs Keegan Bradley, Matt Kuchar, and Dustin Johnson, and finally, a regaining form Phil Mickelson.
European Captain, Jose Maria Olazabal had his squad included the top two players in the world: Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald. The rest of the European team is furnished with in form players like Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, and Peter Hanson, as well as solid ball strikers in Justin Rose, Paul Lawrie, and Francesco Molinari. The final two members of the team are both Major winners, Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer.
This year’s edition of the Ryder Cup will be held at Medinah Country Club in Medinah Illinois, an extremely long course which should suit American longballers Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson.
However, the strength of the European team, their solid iron play, could be a difference maker.
At the end of the day, short game will ultimately be the determining factor.
The Europeans dominated the competition in the last decade, winning 4 of the 5 contests, and are the current holders coming into Medinah. The United states briefly stopped the bleeding in 2008, but suffered a dreadful loss 14 1/2-13 1/2 to Europe at Celtic Manor.
Back on home soil, this time U.S. is ready to take back the Cup. Captain Davis Love III has picked a remarkable squad, and seems to capitalize on points early, winning a majority of the team matches on Friday and Saturday, and then hang on during the Singles play on Sunday.
This is a sound strategy, but if the Americans start off slow, it could prove hard to score more on the final day. Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald will be extremely hard to beat, and there are several rookies on the American squad that could falter.
The Europeans, despite having a mental edge over the Americans, are unlikely to blowout the competitors this time as the U.S. side is incredibly deep, while the European team has many uncertainties.
