The Elgin Street courthouse will remain close on Tuesday due to a break in the water supply line. All the proceedings of the day were postponed until further notice as the water supply line had to be shut off. The manager of media relations for Ottawa, Michael FitzPatrick, disclosed that the break in the water line occurred in the supply line which was connected to the courthouse. He clarified that that municipal water main was not affected during the incident.
Among the hearing of other cases that were postponed, there was a high-ranked sexual assault case of a former Ottawa police sergeant Steve Desjourdy. Desjourdy was accused of sexually abusing a female prisoner in his custody at the Ottawa police cellblock back in 2008. Desjourdy has pleaded not guilty. Now the trial is scheduled to recommence on Thursday.
Reports state that the break in the pipeline resulted in a minor flood within the building which affected the criminal vault of the courthouse. Criminal vault is the room which contains all the search warrants. Total damage caused by the overall mishap is still not estimated.
Charles Hackland, the Regional Senior Ontario Superior Court Justice, stated that the courthouse was kept closed today exclusively for safety concerns, particularly for the prisoners. He confirmed that there was no running water or functioning toilets in the building. The damages caused by the mishap are still being repaired.
