The final session on Friday brought surprises as the local spinners changed the scene going into the final day of the first Test against West Indies. At stumps, the visitors were 244 for 6, leading Bangladesh by 215 runs as in the final hour West Indians lost the safety of 209 for 1, after losing 5 for 35 in the space of 13.1 overs. They still lead by 215 going into the final day, but with the ill Shivnarine Chanderpaul uncertain to bat tomorrow, there is hardly any batting left. This may well be Bangladesh’s best chance to achieve what would be their first Test win against a top opposition.

Before lunch, West Indies had bowled out Bangladesh for 556 but not before the hosts took a lead of 29 with Nasir Hossain scoring a valiant 96. For West Indies, Sunil Narine picked up three wickets including Mahmudullah for 62. Shahadat Hossain remained unbeaten at 13.

West Indies second innings began with an earlier loss of Chris Gayle but the pair of Kieran Powell and Darren Bravo provided an impressive 189-run stand at a brisk rate. Afterwards, Bravo departed for 76, followed by Marlon Samuels for 1. West Indians lost the momentum and Bangladesh spinners ran through West Indies’ middle order on a collapsing pitch in the final hour of play with Shakib Al Hasan taking two wickets, including the wicket of centurion Powell for 110. Powell started off calmly but then gained the momentum to crack his second Test century with a flurry off boundaries.

In a bid to shield the regular No. 5, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, from coming out to the middle, Darren Sammy promoted himself, wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul. However, Ramdin made 5 before he was trapped lbw by Shakib and Permaul 10, bowled by Sohag Gazi in the final over of the day to leave West Indies in a spot of bother.
