Montreal elected its new mayor through a secret ballot as most of the parties casted free votes, ultimately choosing city councilor Michael Applebaum as the new interim mayor. Applebaum scored a very sleek and fortunate majority of 31 over the 29 votes of his rival Richard Deschamps. The speaker disclosed that the remaining three ballots were rejected.

Montreal is brought to the verge of electing a new interim mayor because Gerald Tremblay suddenly resigned on Nov. 5, after a life-long career of 25 years in politics. Tremblay was drowned by the scandal, which made him the highest-profile casualty of the Quebec’s ongoing anti-corruption inquiry. Tremblay labeled his resignation as a “sacrifice,” since he still refuses all the wrongdoing allegations against him.

The elections for the interim mayor were held between two candidates only through a secret voting which took place at around 10 a.m. after a question-and-answer session at a public council meeting. Each candidate was given roughly 20 minutes for addressing the council, soon after which all 62 sitting councilors immediately casted their votes.

The once-dominant Union Montreal now has 26 seats in the council that is not a majority any more. While the Vision Montreal has 16, Projet Montreal has 10 and 12 sit as independents. Applebaum addressed the council with a small speech after the victory, stating that he will be honored to work for the betterment of Montreal. He stated that “I assure you we will all work together.” Applebaum requested to be inaugurated on Monday so that his family could be present to witness it.
