On the 2nd day, English captain Alastair Cook completed brilliant unbeaten hundred, fifth in a row as England captain and third in this series, helped England in reaching 216 for 1 at stumps after bowling out India for 316 on Thursday.
Earlier in the morning, Dhoni lead the Indian tail to make 316 in their first innings. Dhoni showed aggression resuming the play at 2nd Day and drilled James Anderson to the straight fence. Zaheer couldn’t resist long as Monty Panesar trapped him for six for his third wicket. Panesar, the most successful bowler from both sides in this series, got his fourth wicket of the innings and 15th of the series when he captured Sharma for a duck.
At nine wickets down, Dhoni made some hits off Panesar to take India past 300, but an extraordinary delivery by Steven Finn made him out after Swann took a good diving catch running from the slip.
By reaching 23rd three figure mark of his career, Cook (136*) not only leapfrogged the likes of Wally Hammond, Colin Cowdrey, Geoffrey Boycott and Kevin Pietersen as the highest century maker for England, but also paved base for winning a series in India since 1984-85 afloat. Jonathan Trott, with 21 also remained unbeaten by the end of the day’s play.
Cook was dropped at 17 by Cheteshwar Pujara in the first slip off Zaheer khan before continuing to play another big innings. He played comfortably either pace or spin and scored runs all-round the wicket.
Indian spinners too looked ineffective at the gentle pitch of Eden Gardens. From the encouraging performance from his captain, Compton gained confidence and got his maiden, but was trapped lbw at 57 and 165-run partnership between him and Cook get ended.
