On the 4th day of the 3rd test, the match got totally out of control of the hosts as they finished the day with 239 for 9 in their 2nd innings with the mere 32 runs lead.

India would have already lost the match on Day 4 if Ravichandran Ashwin hadn’t dug deep with his effort of unbeaten 83. The offspinner, who also took three wickets in England’s first innings, showed the courage to support Ishant Sharma (10) and the tourists to play the final day and wait for the result.

The day started with the England’s remaining four wickets were picked up for just 14 runs. Pragyan Ojha got Swann (21) caught at slip by Sehwag. Zaheer Khan too got the wicket of Prior (41) who provided Dhoni his 200th catch in Test cricket.

Anderson played nicely before Ashwin had him caught at slip and trapped Panesar lbw for a duck immediately after. Ashwin will be on a hat-trick when he comes on to bowl in England’s second innings.

The Indian openers took a good start with 86 for 0 in their 2nd innings, still trailing the visitors by 121 runs. However failed to keep the runs going and lost quick wickets.

The visitors ripped through the Indian batting by picking up six wickets for 59 runs to slip the hosts at 145 for 6 at tea, still trailing by 62 runs from England’s first innings score of 523.

Graeme Swann bowled Virender Sehwag (49). Gautam Gambhir (40), who was playing again with confidence, had cost India to lose the precious wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara – when he called the batsman for an unavailable run.  Afterwards, Gambhir floated outside his off stump again to a full delivery by Steven Finn and Matt Prior took one-handed catch to seal the wicket.

Sachin Tendulkar was caught by Jonathan Trott at slip off Swann. Yuvraj Singh’s brief stay at the wicket was ended by James Anderson through getting bowled. MS Dhoni’s dismissed by getting caught in the slip off Anderson at zero.

Finn tempted Virat Kohli (20) to play away from his body and and getting him nick to Prior. He trapped Zaheer lbw to a full delivery. Ishant dug in well but was bowled again by Panesar.

Ashwin made his third Test fifty through aggressive play. He made 37-run partnership for the ninth wicket and an unbroken 42-run stand for the last wicket with Pragyan Ojha (3*).
