By the end of Day 3, Sri Lanka struggled hard to avoid a series whitewash against Australia after scoring 225 for 7 in their second innings, with 87 runs lead.

Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade’s unbeaten (102); first century since his 106 against West Indies in Dominica in April last year and his first in Australia; helped the hosts to finish their first-innings 432 for 9 declared at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Australia resumed the day on 342-6 in response to Sri Lanka’s first innings of 294. Wade and Peter Siddle added another 42 runs and took their seventh-wicket partnership to 77. Siddle (38) was caught behind by Dinesh Chandimal off Nuwan Pradeep.

Rangana Herath trapped Mitchell Starc (2) leg before wicket and bowled Nathan Lyon for 4, finishing with 4-95. Jackson Bird (6 not out) remained unbeaten before Australia declared.

Sri Lanka had taken a strong start but lost five wickets for just 46 runs that turned the match into home team’s favor. Dimuth Karunaratne and Mahele Jayawardene were playing solid and guided Sri Lanka to 130-1 with only the loss of Tillakaratne Dilshan – who edged to Phil Hughes in the slips off Mitchell Johnson at 5; before Karunaratne trapped by Jackson Bird in caught behind to Wade for 85. Then Lahiru Thirimanne was dismissed for just seven, caught by Bird off Johnson. The team afterwards slipped from 155-3 to 158-4 when Thilan Samaraweera (0) caught by Mike Hussey off Lyon.

Angelo Mathews played aggressively before running out by David Warner’s timely throw and 178-5 became 178-6 when Jaywardene was caught at first slip off Siddle by Clarke at 60 and exposed Sri Lankan tail to the danger.

Dhammika Prasad and Dinesh Chandimal put on 24 for the seventh wicket before Prasad was caught behind off Starc for 15. Chandimal made his way to 22 with Rangana Herath at 9, bothe remain unbeaten.

Australia would look to quickly mop-up the remaining wickets on Sunday towards 3-0 series victory. However the SCG is creates difficulty for sides batting last. The highest fourth-innings winning total at the ground is 288.
