On the opening day of 1st test match, two Indian offspinners showed up entirely conflicting play as India let Australia off the hook in Chennai. After an ordinary series against England, the test bowler R Ashwin had to face criticism in his effort to try too many variations. Harbhajan Singh was also not showing results and was recalled after a year to the team against Australia due to his splendid record against the opposition – 90 wickets in 16 Tests to mark his 100th test.
After Michael Clarke won the toss and opted to bat, David Warner and Ed Cown provided the team with a terrific start by attacking the bowlers till 43 for 0. When Ashwin got the ball, he immediately brought troubles for the opposition batting line as he had the inspiring first spell (11-2-30-2). Ashwin’s efforts remain successful when Cowan left the track and stumped by Dhoni. Afterwards Phillip Hughes was bowled on a slow delivery.
On the other hand, Harbhajan bowled poorly and leaked runs to take the pressure off from the batsmen. Ashwin struck again after lunch as Shane Watson was caught on a skid. Then Warner was caught in front of the wickets and Ashwin’s second spell (9-2-19-3) was even more inspiring with Australia reeling at 164 for 5. While Harbhajan and Ravindra Jadeja failed to build on the momentum posed by Ashwin and wasted the advantage. But Ashwin showed the world that he is back in form after learning from his past mistakes and is able to deliver whenever it is needed of him.
