The Day 11 of the 2013 French Open featured plenty of phenomenal tennis but no major upsets.
On the men’s side, top dogs Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal both cruised through their quarterfinal opponents in straight sets to guarantee an epic semifinal showdown between the two heavyweights on Friday. Djokovic has beaten Tommy Haas with 6-3, 7-6(5), 7-5 to pave his way to 12th straight Grand Slam semi-final. While Nadal – the seven-time champion is continually improving his performance with every match he plays in this tournament currently. He managed to defeat Stanislas Wawrinka after two hours of hard work with score 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.
In the women’s draw, both Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka survived to set up an intriguing semifinal matchup on Thursday. Sharapova, the defending champion at Roland Garros, needed three sets to defeat Jelena Jankovic, who faded after a flawless opening set and lost the match with 6-0, 4-6, 3-6. While Azarenka survived a lengthy last-eight encounter with her former doubles partner Maria Kirilenko with 7-6(3), 6-2, making her the first woman ever to fly the Belarus flag in the final four at the French Open. After completing her personal Grand Slam semi-final set, she has also proved herself in the only major left where she had fallen short.
