On day 2 of the 2014 Australian Open, outcomes were almost predicted with very few shocks. Rafael Nadal return to Melbourne after missing last year’s tournament was positive as he progressed into the second round of this year’s tournament, but would be a little disappointed to see his opening workout cut short by a groin injury to Bernard Tomic. Nadal had only won the first set with 6-4 when the opponent Tomic called it a day.

Andy Murray embraced the victory after only playing three quick sets against Go Soeda. The British star overcame little resistance from his Japanese opponent, seeing the match out with a number of excellent serves for a 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 triumph.

Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also get advanced to the second round with straight-sets victories over James Duckworth and Filippo Volandri, respectively.

Maria Sharapova battled hard to overcome Bethanie Mattek-Sands and won with 6-3, 6-4.
