On the opening day of only test match, South African bowlers Dale Steyn and Dane Piedt collected four wickets apiece, but Zimbabwe kept on resisting the situation as they batted out to reach stumps on 248 for 9.
Ninth-ranked Zimbabwe had elected to bat after winning the toss against the top ranked team. The hosts even after suffering early blows remained determined to survive the fearsome bowling attack and were marshalled by skipper Brendan Taylor’s 93.
It was just the fourth time in eight attempts that Zimbabwe had passed 200 in their first innings of a Test against the Proteas – an achievement that looked highly unlikely as Steyn and Piedt pounced in the first two sessions.
