The easiest way of travelling through France must be on the back of a bike. Bike as in motorcycle, not bicycle. So why does it happen then that every year thousands of bike riders, bike as in bicycle, flock together to jam the roads of France and to torture their bodies in a month-long mammoth of a race. Well, probably because it’s heaps of fun. But Le Tour de France is more than an excruciating bike racing, bike as in bicycle. It’s a huge organization operation, a huge job of maintaining the tracks, vehicles and people.

Kawasaki has been cooperating with Le Tour de France for almost four decades, all the way since 1977. This year’s Tour, the 99th edition, has been accompanied by Kawasaki’s grand tourer, the 1400 GTR. Twenty-seven GTR motorcycles are assigned to weave through the dense mash of bikes, bikes as in motorcycles, people and even a few cars and help where their help is needed. The Tour de France Kawasaki GTRs come in several different guises, depending on the tasks they were given.

The medic is white with ambulance insignia on it.

The water carriers wear their sponsor logos and carry twelve bottles of water, six in each specially modified side-case. They are team-neutral and deliver water to any rider in need.

The yellow one is the moving information board with passenger carrying a time board that is displayed to the contesters.

The rest are intended for judges, photographers, journalists and regulators.

Every motorcycle is also equipped with a radio unit, for communicating with the rest of the Tour staff, and that is as far as the modifications go. Oh, except for the holes in the side-cases on the water carrier bikes. Bikes as in motorcycles.
