Alberta Soccer AssociationMembers of Canada’s women’s Olympic soccer team will be in Edmonton on February 4 and 5 to train with local youth soccer players. Led by Lou Marsh Award winner and Olympic bronze medallist Christine Sinclair, and joined by Olympic teammates Karina LeBlanc, Diana Matheson and Rhian Wilkinson, the two day event will be an opportunity for young athletes to train and interact with the nation’s best.

Training sessions will include 400 young players from Edmonton between the ages of 9 and 18 at the Commonwealth Field House. Tickets were sold out in less than 24 hours by the Edmonton Minor Soccer Association (EMSA) and its respective zones as well as the Edmonton Interdistrict Youth Soccer Association (EIYSA).

On February 4, a press conference will take place at 11:00 AM in the City Room of Edmonton’s City Hall followed by a luncheon proudly presented by BMO at the Westin Hotel (10135 100 St.) which will be attended by the four Olympic heroes. Tickets for the luncheon will go on sale to groups wishing to buy tables of 10 starting this week.

“I’m looking forward to heading back to Edmonton because they have always been so warm and welcoming. Every time I have been there it has been an incredible experience. I know there is a lot of passion for the game there. We cannot wait to come in and share some of our experiences with the kids and community in these sessions,” stated Karina LeBlanc.

Diana Matheson also shared her excitement about coming to Edmonton, “2012 was the best year of our lives, and we are honoured to have shared it with so many Canadians across the country. Now we want to keep that momentum going towards 2015, and to meet and inspire as many young soccer players as we can.  We are excited to be coming to Edmonton to work with the next generation of Canadian soccer players!”

The Alberta Soccer Association (ASA) will be holding a media call on January 22, 2013 (time TBD) to provide information on the event. Karina LeBlanc, Diana Matheson and Rhian Wilkinson will participate in the media call following their return from the Four Nations Cup in China.

The ASA, the City of Edmonton and FC Edmonton have all been working together to proudly support the event. “The ASA is very excited to help bring these four Olympic Heroes to Edmonton. Youth soccer in Edmonton is growing and our two youth organizations, EMSA and EIYSA, coming together to provide this event to their members is incredible.”
