Eddies play spoil and manage a point against Cosmos

FC Edmonton was looking to play spoiler and force a Week 13 decision for the Soccer Bowl Championship as they faced the New York Cosmos on Sunday, October 20th

The game began with two quick chances for the Cosmos. The first was a good cross into the box to the left of Eddies keeper Lance Parker, but the header was deflected out of bounds. Not long after, Cosmos midfielder Paulo Mendes sent a long shot on goal, but the ball sailed high above the Eddies goal.

The 4th minute brought the first chance for FCE as Daryl Fordyce let a good shot go from distance, however Cosmos keeper Kyle Reynish was equal to the task to make a good diving save.

Good passing sequences continued from both sides but no solid chances were generated for some time. The FCE defence shined again in the 29th minute as Parker was forced to make a jumping save to prevent a goal from Cosmos Marcos Senna.

The halftime whistle came with no stoppage time. Both sides made every effort to keep pushing the ball forward, but it was a very strong defensive first half by both squads.

The second half brought more strong possession play from both parties. As the game intensified, yellow cards came frequently with five issued in total. The first was issued in the 60th minute, when Eddies defender David Proctor was given a yellow for a hard challenge. Cautions were also issued to the FCE’s Daryl Fordyce, Chris Nurse, and Massimo Mirabelli in the 65th, 71st and 76th minute respectively. Only one caution was given to the Cosmos, as midfielder Daniel Szetela was booked in the 72nd

In an attempt to shake things up, FCE coach Colin Miller made his first substitution of the match, bringing Mirabelli in for Sadi Jalali in the 70th minute.

The first goal of the contest came in the 78th minute. Cosmos striker Alessandro Noselli flicked on a header into the box to squeak it just past keeper Parker. With just over 10 minutes to play, the Cosmos had a one-goal advantage and an opportunity to clinch the NASL Fall Season.

Not so fast. As coach Miller subbed in Michael Nonni for Robert Garrett and Edem Mortotsi for Chris Nurse, the Eddies found resurgence in their game as they began to mount a comeback. That opportunity came in the 90th minute, as defender David Proctor knocked home a strong header off a corner kick.

Extra time brought no real chances for each side, with the match ending 1-1. Both teams gave a great effort, but it was the Eddies who showed their perseverance to come out with a draw and negate any chance of New York clinching a spot in the Soccer Bowl Championship.
