Iran exposed real global terrorism in UN General Assembly

                 The eyes of the whole world were fixed on this 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, called amidst the on-going war between America, Israel and Iran. Iranian President Masood Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi, representatives of Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and aides to the President and Foreign Minister attended the session. US President Donald Trump addressed the General Assembly on the very first day of the session i.e. 22 September, while Iranian President Massoud Pezheshkian gave his speech in the General Assembly on the second day i.e. 23 September. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the third day of the session on 24 September. Due to these leaders attacking each other for three consecutive days, there was deep diplomatic tension between these countries in the General Assembly.

                The tension started with the speech of US President Donald Trump on September 22. Whereas Trump said in his address that he has to take a big decision. Either an agreement should be made with Iran that will give it a chance to rebuild and become a better country, or the Islamic Republic system should be completely destroyed. He asked in his own style, ‘Should they push Iran into ‘hell’ without giving it a chance to escape? Trump made it clear that the US will never allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, and this is one of his biggest priorities. Trump openly defended US military action against Iran. Not only this, Trump called Iran the ‘number one sponsor of terrorism’ and alleged that this regime has spread anarchy in the Middle East and around the world for the last 51 years. Trump also appealed to other countries of the world to maintain economic pressure on Tehran and support America in economically isolating Iran.

             After this, on September 23, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian gave a very emotional, truthful, aggressive and historic speech that shocked the whole world. The US representatives walked out during the Iranian President’s speech, while Israel had already decided to boycott. President Massoud Pezeshkian said that “we are not terrorists, but victims of terror”. He showed from the stage pictures of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and innocent children killed in the Iranian Minab School. He hit back at Trump’s allegations, saying, “Those who are terrorists themselves are addressing us with this term. I come from Iran where our respected supreme leader was assassinated in a joint US-Israeli attack without any legal framework or reason. We have not attacked any country before in the last 200 years. Our innocent people have become victims of cowardly attacks, we have only protected ourselves,” Pezeshkian said. Responding to US threats, the Iranian President clarified that “Iran does not want war, but it will not bow to pressure. We have never capitulated and will never bow our heads. Iran does not need permission from any other country to defend itself. We have responded to attacks, but we have never targeted the civilian population.” Pezeshkian strongly criticized the double standards of Western countries on the issue of nuclear program, saying that “Iran does not want to build a nuclear bomb, but it will also never give up its right to peaceful nuclear technology. This energy is necessary for the treatment of our sick people, for the progress of agriculture and industries. On the other hand, Israel has nuclear weapons, which is not even a part of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, yet international agencies only impose sanctions on Iran.” Massoud Pezeshkian clearly stated in the United Nations that “We cannot talk about peace without resolving the issue of Palestine.”

            The Iranian President slammed Israel over the on-going violence in Gaza, saying that “Israel is killing innocent civilians there, but economic sanctions are being imposed on Tehran”. He expressed his unwavering support for the thousands of civilians killed and displaced in Gaza. Referring to the recent internal demonstrations within Iran, he presented them not as a protest against the government, but as a show of public solidarity and support for their country and its security. Pezeshkian said that “despite the tensions they have not completely closed the door to negotiations”. He said that “Iran has always been committed to coming to the negotiating table and the avenues of diplomacy and negotiation are open. But negotiations should take place on an equal footing without any military or economic pressure”. Perhaps this was the first time when the head of state of any country on American soil accused America of being a terrorist and a murderer.

            But on September 24, when Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu came on the stage to speak in the General Assembly and as soon as he started his speech, the delegations of 77 countries walked out of the hall. The countries that walked out included 18 countries in the Arab region, 14 in Asia, 20 in Africa, 17 in Latin America and the Caribbean, 6 in Europe and 2 in the Pacific. Irritated by this mass boycott, Netanyahu, after remaining silent for about 3 minutes, directly addressed the walkout delegates, calling them “morally cowards”. He said, “Before I start the speech, I would like to make a small announcement. If there is any other ‘morally coward’ left in this hall who has not walked out yet, please walk out right now.” He then justified all Israeli military actions against Iran, including Gaza. On the other hand, during Netanyahu’s speech, thousands of people gathered in the anti-Netanyahu rally outside the UN Headquarters, calling him a murderer and anti-humanity. Dozens of protesters were also arrested by the New York Police. However, today Iran’s purity, truthfulness, fearlessness, good intentions and honesty have brought it into the list of popular countries of the world, while people’s anger and hatred towards countries like America and Israel is increasing worldwide. It would not be wrong to say that in the United Nations General Assembly, Iran has further exposed the real global terrorism being spread by America and Israel.
