A friend of a friend tipped me off to this blog called LA Express Lane.  As you may or may now know, Los Angeles has been without an NFL team for many years, and has been angling to get a struggling franchise to relocate to the city.

Heading up the charge as of late has been one Edward P. Ronski, who proposes to build a stadium in Industry, east of the city — you may read about that here.

Well, apparently word has come out from Ronski’s people that he is seriously considering calling their hoped-for team the Express. The LA Express was the name of a franchise in the United States Football League, a rival league set up in the 1980s that ran for a few years. You may read more about the LA Express here.

Anyway, the blog has only one entry so far, which I cite in full below:

The Return of the Los Angeles Express? Yes!!

A friend of mine works for a company owned in part by Edward P. Roski, Jr. For those that don’t know, Roski is fighting to attract and NFL team in Los Angeles and get a stadium built in Industry, a place where he has had many dealings. Wikipedia has an entry on Los Angeles Stadium, his prosposed idea.

I can’t tell you where my friend works exactly, or else he will be found out. But let’s just say that he’s close to some of Roski’s closest associates.

Okay, I’ve said enough. Now let’s get down to the email that my friend sent me.

"Hey _____________, got some interesting news for you. There is all kinds of BUZZ down here that Ronski is considering going with the name LA Express for his new NFL team. One of his closest executives is pushing hard for this idea. I don’t need to tell you where the name comes from, right? The USFL!!

The idea is that Ronski wants to imprint a brand on the team that people recognize, but that isn’t associated with LA’s old NFL teams. Obviously the Rams and Raiders are taken as names, and they don’t want to invent something that sounds stupid, like Earthquakes. Express works perfectly.

This is big news, but I wanted to share it with you. Spread the word and maybe we can get the whole city behind the name. LA Express! Fantastic."

For those that don’t know, the Los Angeles Express were a key franchise in the United States Football League, and played in all three seasons of the league, from 1983 to 1985. They signed Steve Young and in 1984 nearly made the league final, but were forced to play outside LA because of the Olympics.

As my friend suggested, I made this blog to promote the idea of bringing the Express back to LA. We’ll get an NFL team sooner or later. Let’s make sure we name it right!
