Cross-Pollination features the world premiere of Mark Carlson’s Cave Paintings for saxophone, violin, viola, cello, and piano. Cave Paintings is an investigation of, and homage to, music from American popular culture of the 1930s and 1940s, exploring the melodic and harmonic invention of that era. The new piece will be played alongside Schumann’s String Quartet in Eb major, Op. 47 and Josef Suk’s Four Pieces for Violin and Piano, Op. 17, providing for an interesting juxtaposition of chamber works, past and present. It’s the mission of Pacific Serenades to commission and present new chamber music from Southern California, and title of this performance — Cross-Pollination — represents the eclecticism of the quintet performing Cave Paintings, and the international influence of Pacific Serenades.
