Composed by Mozart at the height of his fame, Così fan tutte tells the tale of two military officers who decide to test their sweethearts’ faithfulness by disguising themselves and attempting to seduce one another’s lady loves. Though the ladies fail the test — "women are like that," according to the title — they are lovable for their failings, and their jilted lovers may yet find a place in their hearts for their poor disgraced brides-to-be.
