Gem of the Ocean: Drama of African-American Experience

Rubicon Theatre (Ventura, CA)

"Gem of the Ocean"

Riots erupt in Pennsylvania’s Hill District after a black mill worker is wrongfully accused of theft; across town, a young man from Alabama arrives at the home of Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old healer and mystic who sends him on a journey of spiritual awakening. Set in 1904 and chronologically the first play in August Wilson’s The Pittsburgh Cycle — a decade-by-decade dramatization of aspects of the African-American experience in the 20th century, Gem of the Ocean also makes for the first of Wilson’s plays to be staged by Rubicon Theatre. James O’Neil directs this powerful, mystical play.
