Madrid Theatre (Canoga Park, CA)
One of the greatest comic operas ever written receives a Real Housewives meets Jerry Springer treatment with Dylan F. Thomas’ new production. Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville already contains ample scheming and trickery to match a season of The Bachelor, but this fun adaptation puts the story of Almaviva, Rosina, Dr. Bartolo and Figaro over the top. In the opera, wily Figaro agrees to help the bachelor Almaviva rescue Rosina from the clutches of Bartolo by concocting an outrageously complicated scheme to smuggle her out. Throw in a flamboyant music teacher and a few behind the scenes conspirators for a ridiculously modern twist on a classic story. The three-hour opera will be sung in Italian with English supertitles projected above the stage.
