REDCAT: Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (Los Angeles, CA)

"A Missionary Position"

This multimedia solo piece is Ugandan-American artist Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine’s vehement reaction to the rampant homophobia that has washed over his motherland. Incorporating video footage and still photography gathered on the front lines of Uganda’s LGBT movement, Mwine layers the documentary material with a portrayal of characters drawn from interviews. A Missionary Position is a powerful statement on the state of the movement as seen through the eyes of a Ugandan government official, a transgender sex worker, a gay priest and a lesbian activist.
