Orpheum Theatre (Los Angeles, CA)
Outfest celebrates 30 years of presenting its Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. Since 1982 more than 5,600 films depicting the lives and experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people have been seen by audiences numbering in the millions. Outfest 2012 kicks off with an Opening Night Gala that starts with a screening of Vito, Jeffrey Schwarz’s stirring and poignant portrait of activist and film historian Vito Russo. Russo was a 24-year-old film student who experienced the Stonewall uprising and, as a result, saw the need to define gay identity and culture. His landmark book The Celluloid Closet explored the way Hollywood portrayed queer characters and shaped both the gay self-image and the world’s perception of gays. The film follows Russo’s dramatic journey through the early days of Gay Liberation Front marches with Bette Midler to the founding of ACT UP and GLAAD to his own devastating battle with AIDS. Woven throughout is archival material and heartwarming interviews with Russo’s family and friends, including Armistead Maupin, Lily Tomlin, Bruce Vilanch and Larry Kramer. Prior to the screening, John Waters will be presented with the 16th Annual Outfest Achievement Award. Your Priority ticket gets you seating in the side orchestra or front balcony, and admission to the after-party featuring an open bar and silent auction.
